my final verdict now that i am nearing the end of this clusterfuck is that if you are setting up your own website to sell or paywall content you should not bother sending a newsletter unless you're really fucking determined
i am now paying for
SMTP2GO to actually process emails and not have them get sent straight to spam (note that the free version of this works fine for basic account stuff for your users) [this is $10 a month or $100 a year]
MailPoet refused to actually send emails for me but i still have to pay for the creator plan that doesn't include processing emails, because that's the only way to ensure that only paying members get emails (sending emails to nonpaying members would make it even more expensive) [this is $11 a month or $114 a year]
a PO box, because you're required to have an address in the footer of your emails and i'm not giving out my home address [this is $19 every three months or $58 a year]
none of which i would have to do if i just kept saying "if you want emails use an rss to email service like feedrabbit, here's a link, good fucking luck"
#original#if you know a way to convert wordpress posts into newsletters that doesn't require mailpoet let me fucking know#i'm mad that i have to give them money for basic filtering when they refused to do any actual work#i tried a bunch of different plugins and none of them fucking worked worth a shit#so i had to trudge my way back to mailpoet while being pissed off the entire time#deadass in three months i will probably send an email that just says 'here is a feedrabbit link i am not sending this again bye'#imagine if i were also paying for the paywalling service. fucking nightmare.

WordPress.com vs WordPress.org: What’s the Difference and Which One Should You Choose?

If you’re thinking about launching a website or starting a blog, chances are you’ve come across WordPress. But there’s a common point of confusion: WordPress.com vs WordPress.org. At first glance, they sound like the same thing — but they’re actually quite different platforms with distinct features, pros, and cons.
In this blog post, we’ll break down the differences between the two, help you understand which one suits your needs, and guide you toward the best choice for your website goals.
What is WordPress.org?
WordPress.org is the self-hosted version of WordPress. It’s the open-source software that anyone can download for free and install on their own web hosting server. With WordPress.org, you have full control over your website.
Key Features:
Complete Customization: Install any theme or plugin, modify the code, and design your site exactly the way you want.
Ownership: You fully own your website and all its content.
Monetization Freedom: Use any ad network, sell products, offer memberships, or add affiliate links with no restrictions.
Advanced Functionality: Great for eCommerce (using plugins like WooCommerce), custom development, SEO tools, and more.
Pros:
Total control and flexibility
Thousands of free and premium plugins/themes
Full access to your site's backend and data
Ideal for business, large blogs, and complex websites
Cons:
Requires web hosting (usually $5–$15/month)
You handle security, backups, and updates (though plugins can automate much of this)
Slightly steeper learning curve for beginners
What is WordPress.com?
WordPress.com is a hosted platform created by Automattic (the company behind WordPress). It offers a simplified, all-in-one solution for building a website without worrying about hosting, maintenance, or technical tasks.
Key Features:
No Hosting Needed: Hosting is included. No need to buy a separate plan or domain (though custom domains are available on paid plans).
Easy to Start: Perfect for beginners who want a fast and simple setup.
Maintenance-Free: WordPress.com handles updates, security, and backups.
Pros:
Free basic plan available
No setup or maintenance required
User-friendly dashboard
Great for hobby blogs, personal websites, or simple portfolios
Cons:
Limited customization (especially on the free plan)
Cannot upload custom themes or plugins unless on Business or higher plan
Limited monetization options on lower-tier plans
WordPress.com branding unless you upgrade
WordPress.com vs WordPress.org: Quick Comparison Table

Businesses, pros, devs
Which One Should You Choose?
Choose WordPress.com if:
You want a hassle-free experience and don’t want to manage hosting or security.
You’re a beginner with no technical background.
You just need a simple blog or portfolio site.
You’re okay with limited flexibility or willing to pay for premium features.
Choose WordPress.org if:
You want full control and the ability to customize everything.
You’re building a business website, store, or scalable project.
You need to monetize your content freely.
You're comfortable (or willing to learn) about managing your own hosting.

Final Thoughts
Both WordPress.com and WordPress.org offer powerful tools for creating websites, but the right choice depends on your goals. If you’re starting out or want something easy and low-maintenance, WordPress.com is a solid option. If you're aiming for maximum control, customization, and scalability, WordPress.org is the way to go.
Still unsure? Start with WordPress.com to get your feet wet — and when you’re ready for more freedom, you can always migrate to WordPress.org.

[ID: a picture of OP's notebook and notes. The ppapers are covered in symbols and sigils.]
I have become a regular at the local cafe. I sit at the lunch counter with my laptop to write. The workers keep me updated on all the tea.
Barista: Oh god here he comes.
Me: who?
Barista: White Ferrari guy. Hes banned from the other cafe. All he ever does is tell the same stories about the pyramids. Or ghosts. Or his car. Don't make eye contact with him. If he talks to you he won't leave you alone- Hi hello welcome!
#op you are SO real for this#and the baristas were not lying there is ALWAYS a guy like that#we had the guy who said he was technically a prince and he had a wordpress site to prove it??#those certificates looked dodge tho#and we had the guy who wanted to talk about his screenplay at LENGTH#and it turned out it was basically fred astaire/ ginger rogers fanfic??#rn we just have Jeremy

I always go down weird rabbitholes reading random stuff online but I thought this was really funny lol. All from one long blog post
#talking#from a very long very rambly very unfocused wordpress post about how nk is not a dictatorship and does not have a cult of personality#and they just kept defining basic words!!! and kept reiterating “bourgeois dictionary” i loved every time it came up#and i was wondering about what kind of person the author is and how they got so invested in nk because they do genuinely know a lot#and linked a lot of sources like that must have been a lot of work#(though admittedly one source was just quoting someone named CommieDad)#but right at the end they get into using an online translator to translate the word “worship” to korean and back#(to argue that the word is not indicative of a cult of personality in the original language)#and i'm just like wait they don't even speak korean???????????????#i mean i guess they also feel the need to use dictionaries for english words so who knows#pardon. BOURGEOIS dictionaries

I think about how love is something we’ve been writing about for a very long time, how companionship between men is decried. I think about Barbara Kruger and elaborate rituals you construct to touch other men, how people reinvent these rituals for you.
How horrible that the mask still bears the whorls of his fingers, their fine ridges distinctly his, with a resemblance so pitiful. His lungs seize all at once, overcome with the frigid night air and the thin coating of dust that’s settled in their membrane.
His time is running out. The clay is almost dry, lighter now, steely gray under his hands.
Enkidu never thought he’d die under the light of the stars. He never thought he’d return to the trees and the boars, the tusks he’d once taken and twisted in jest, the wildness that birthed him, a gift, they’d said.
A gift. He’d been Gilgamesh’s gift. He’d taken his companion’s arm, fought and scraped and triumphed over the Gods themselves and that had been their assurance that yes, they were great, they were higher, higher, practically immortal.
But here he is, the skin that lies below the wound over his pelvis stained dark. In the night it looks almost purple, brown, blood already curdled, no longer red. That which once produced vibrance from him now stings his nose, the taste of metal, of battle, his own undoing. And maybe he could have seen it coming. Maybe there is a world where he had the sense not to rush into valor with love under his heels. There is a place where he could have let Gilgamesh go for a God he did not love in turn.
But that place is not here, and he has made himself alone now, with only his frantic fingers to guide him, pulling and thumbing the awkward planes of his face into Earth.
It’s wrong. The slant of the mask’s forehead is too steep, its brows too proud, its chin altogether too round, too child-like. The shape of his beard better resembles the plume of an eagle than the scratchy mess he knows he’s grown.
He’s too magnificent, too young. When he holds up the mask to the sky, moonbeams shining in the masks’ hollow eyes, he sees a person he doesn’t recognize. He holds it aloft despite the piercing pain in his gut, his trembling hands rotating the piece so he can determine exactly what is wrong with it.
But what isn’t wrong with it? He knows just as well as any man that memory is faulty, that this is the only chance he has at reaching that elusive immortality, that diabolical greed that hides behind his ferocious lover’s dark eyes. He’s not doing it for himself. He’s doing it for Gilgamesh’s long life after his. He’s doing it for his own, selfish need to live on forever. Gilgamesh is the only one that’s ever mattered.
It’s his own fault that he never schooled his hands in the art of crafting fine things, that he’s spent his short life seeking the life of the outrageous lion rather than the careful owl, his eyes trained on the target in front of him rather than the great big sky, blue as it ever was.
Blueness turns to black before him as the night drags on. The rush of the wind around him obscures whatever calls may come his way, but no one would dare look for him out here.
He is Enkidu. He was of the wild once and he shall find a way to return, sneak in through the back door, rise up from the spring, claw his way up and out from moist, tight-packed dirt, farmland-rich dirt, reborn as both animal and man, ready not to change a thing but be better, crueler, closer to Gilgamesh’s side.
His legs fail him all at once, a collapse followed by the syrupy drip of blood and flesh onto the dry topsoil. He closes his eyes, the mask clutched in his hands and listens to the insistent splatter of blood, his own life draining in front of him.
If the Gods were to save him, it would have happened by now. If the Gods loved him, they would have offered him the chance to shape his likeness with deft fingers despite his lack of practice.
He startles at a rustling behind a nearby tree. He blinks his eyes open to see a boar across the clearing, its black eyes shining in the moonlight. He looks up at the stars, the familiar shapes he’s traced his entire life, and back down. Slowly, he raises the mask to his face. He settles the unfamiliar nose across his own bridge, aligns his nostrils as best he can, and grunts with all the strength of the divine bull he’d slain hours prior.
With the last of his might, he rocks forward onto his knees, hops up onto his toes, and stalks forward.
The boar shows no sign of kinship. Enkidu feels none in turn.
He stops. He smiles. He pounces.
At the first rip of flesh, he hopes in death he’ll be unrecognizable.
#repost from my wordpress#writing#mythology#gilgamesh#i was assigned to basically write enkidu fanfic so here it is#my writing#writers on tumblr#writerblr

Today I learned that wordpress has introduced an AI "assistant" to help people write and I learned this by having the thing king hit me out of nowhere by warning me that "immediately" is a "complex word" and I know it's just a stupid robot with no context but this thing warning me, a writer, that the science fiction story I'm writing has a "complex word" (so watch out!) and that word is the dirt basic word "immediately" filled me with a moment of incandescent rage the likes of which I've never felt before and I'm awake now.
Anyway it's easy to turn the robot off but this reminds me of the time I got grounded for using the word "transportation" as a teenager and this time there's not even a person doing it.

Book Review: Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield
This story left me with a strange, lingering feeling — a mix of emotions that’s hard to put into words. When my book club picked it up at the end of last year, it was met with mixed reactions. Most members didn’t enjoy it, with only a couple finding things to appreciate for different reasons. Now, having read it myself, I understand where both the likes and dislikes come from. I’m eager to share…
